Meetings: How to Make More With Less
According to a recent CNN poll (related article), most people think that there are too many meetings in their workplace:

I think this finding goes right along with the 37 Signals piece, Meetings Are Toxic. Meetings can be unnecessary and counter-productive. An excerpt:
There’s nothing more toxic to productivity than a meeting.
Here’s a few reasons why:
- They break your work day into small, incoherent pieces that disrupt your natural workflow
- They drift off-subject easier than a Chicago cab in heavy snow
- They often contain at least one moron that inevitably gets his turn to waste everyone’s time with nonsense
Having a ton of respect for the 37 Signals’ products and what they’ve accomplished with a relatively small team, I tend to agree with them.
Here’s a list of suggestions to ensure productive meetings:
- Set a timer
- Invite as few people as possible.
- Never have a meeting without a clear agenda.
Based on my experience in both leading and participating in meetings, following the steps above really does help to ensure more productive meetings.
